Prius Battery Rebuilding Guide
Rebuild the dead Prius Battery you have now following this Guide of instructions? Did that thought ever come to mind? Because I am here to tell you it can be done.
Four wheels that run on a battery. Who would have thought? The good point is that it saves you a lot of money and fits right in with the latest fad these days of going green. When it comes time to replace the battery it couldn't be any harder than changing the batteries in a flash light. Correct? Take the old ones out and put the new ones in.
Then That Dreaded Day Came
Time comes and goes by so fast. It was a cold morning by the lake as I got in the car. As I went to start it up, that light came on that I never wanted to see. The life of my car was over. Well, let me rephrase that. The life of the battery that runs it was over. It felt like I watched all my independence disappear right in front of me. I needed to find a replacement for my Prius Battery or a way to refurbish it.
I found a guide online that shows you exactly how you can do this. Rebuild the battery you have just by replacing the cells in it. What happens most of the time is that only a few of the cells go bad. Kind of like those color ink cartridges on your printer. Two colors are full but one is almost empty so it says you have to replace the entire cartridge. The same goes for your hybrid battery.
The price that Toyota wanted for a new Prius battery was $4,000! I'm sure my chin hit the floor when I heard that. I knew it would cost a little more than couple of flash light batteries, but FOUR digits? After getting the same price from several places I quit calling dealerships.
When I heard the prices to replace it, this light kept flashing in my head. Rebuild it or refurbish it yourself. Before I called to have it towed to the garage, I called the mechanic I've been doing business with for years. Jimmy told me he knew nothing about rebuilding these hybrid batteries and suggested I go to a dealership.
That answered two questions. There was no reason to call a tow truck and I had already called half a dozen dealerships about a Prius Battery Replacement and how much a new one would cost. I was determined to find a way to refurbish the battery instead. Which is just what I came across searching online. A guide that would show me how to rebuild it. Step by step.

So What Was the Problem and Caused It to Die?
From the research I have done on hybrid batteries they talk about how it recharges itself. Kind of like being at an intersection at a traffic light. Like red light or green light. When the vehicle comes to a stop or starts up again it actually charges itself. As great as that sounds, once the battery gets four or more years old, the ability to do this starts to decline. So the battery starts to become weaker as well as it's ability to recharge.
In a sense, what happens is a 180 degrees of what happens to a battery you plug in to charge. Take your cell phone for instance. If you keep it plugged in all the time and never use it, the battery eventually dies because it has become over charged. Meaning you have never used all the juice that is stored up into it.
Just the opposite happens in one of these hybrid batteries. Being that they recharge their own cells. As the battery gets older they lose this capability. So every time you start and stop on the road, the battery starts getting less and less of a charge and eventually dies out.

I Couldn't Believe It!
I wanted to share this with those who might be as excited as I was to see there was real hope out there! Who ever put this guide together spent a lot of time on it. There is another video on the site as well that will give you some ideas. If you feel you're just not the "handy man" type or simply do not have the time to take on a task like this. They got e-mail from people saved money and just used a different approach. While they still saved over $3,000!
As I kept reading, the information got better and better. The method they came up with will cost you around $500 plus the cost of the guide, which was next to nothing. On top of that, these guys have taken the time to set up a forum on their site. If you find yourself scratching your head during the process, you can go to this forum and post a question about rebuilding your Prius battery. Totally awesome!
I got it done in a couple of days and believe me, I am not the mechanical type you would find at your local garage. I did this all by myself.
Just a Couple of Thoughts I Want to Add
Not only does it have step by step directions, there are pictures with each step that show you how to do it. It was as easy as buying a new cabinet and following the directions to put if together. "Attach part A to part B and fasten with a C bolt and attach nut D . Tighten both pieces." It was really that simple.
If you are not the handyman type I would suggest buying the guide and giving it to your mechanic. Especially if you have been doing business with the same individual for years that has become someone you trust.
I thought this was SO cool, I bought an extra copy of the guide and gave it to Jimmy. I called him a couple of weeks later to see what he thought. He was in disbelief. He told me how much sense it all made.
He wanted to reimburse me for the price of the guide. I snickered and told him, "Please don't worry about it. After all the years of good service you have given me at your shop, consider it as a gift of thanks Jimmy."
If any of you reading this are looking to replace your Prius battery, go to this site and read the information. What have you got to lose? As for me, I've been back on the road for about a month now and everything is running as smooth as the day I bought the car.
Plus, I am the proud father of a new baby boy. 8^)
